Los Chontales
There are two distinct groups of
Chontales in Mexico. One group lives in Tabasco and the other in
Oaxaca. While their names are the same, their language grouping is
distinct. The climates in the two areas are very different as well.
The Chontales of Tabasco live in the central part of the state in Centla,
Jonuta, Centro, Macuspana, and Nacajuca. The Chontales of Oaxaca (also
called Tequistlatecos) live in Santiago Astata and San Pedro Huamelula.
The Chontales practices a mixture of indigenous beliefs and Catholicism.
They worship their ancient gods as well as practice the traditions of
the Catholic church. In both groups, there has been an openness to
the Gospel.
